When you think you can’t, take a page from Yulissa Arescurenaga’s playbook.
After taking her very first class in 2008, Yulissa fell in love with Zumba®. She was only 16 at the time, but the freedom to express herself to the pulsating Latin beats spoke to her heart and she knew she had to make teaching Zumba® her life’s work.
Becoming a licensed Zumba® instructor is no easy task, but driven by a desire to share her passion and enthusiasm for the dance fitness craze created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez during the 1990s, the teen was determined to achieve her goal. She worked tirelessly for six hours a day over the course of four years, memorizing different combinations of patterns and routines danced to various rhythms and in 2012 fulfilled her dream… she is the first licensed Zumba® instructor with Downs Syndrome in the United States.
Yulissa’s story is one of hope and inspiration not only for people with Downs Syndrome, autism and other developmental disabilities, it is a story that serves to remind us all that no matter what obstacles we face, achieving goals is possible with hard work and determination…for everyone.
Watch Yulissa lead Beto Perez’s live Zumba® class at the 2013 Zumba® Instructors Convention.
