…which makes it the perfect day to contemplate the proper spelling of this iconic ring-shaped chunk of sweet-fried American culture. Doughnut or donut? That is the question.

Merriam Webster’s lists doughnut as the original and official spelling and donut as a less common variant, but if you find the debate super intriguing and this simple explanation isn’t enough to quench your curiousity, click here to get the whole story.

Next begs the question, How does one, who is NOT a grammar and spelling nerd – a.k.a NORMAL – celebrate National Doughnut Day?  Answer: By eating doughnuts! (Of course.) Lots and lots and lots and lots of doughnuts. Unless, however, your health and well-being requires you to stick to a strict gluten-free diet, then you watch videos of other people eating doughnuts.

Doughnut Dollies. The doughnut shop is hosting a contest on its Facebook page, asking participants to comment with their favorite doughnut flavor combination. The winner gets a doughnut named after them and a dozen free doughnuts.

Duck Donuts. All locations will offer customers one bare, cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar doughnut, no purchase necessary, and a coupon for “Buy One Doughnut, Get One Free,” redeemable until June 17.

Dunkin’ Donuts. The chain is offering a free doughnut with the purchase of any beverage.

Walmart. Every location is giving out free doughnuts to customers; by the end of the day, the retailer expects to give away 1.2 million donuts.

  1. A great comfort food. Only problem. How do you stop at one? For this reason I stay away. Although I have indulged in my earlier years. Now they’re just a memory.
